Daniel Snow Photoshoot- Songwriter-philosopher Daniel Snow is an up and coming talent in New Mexico where he recently won the 2009 New Mexico Music Award in the category of Best Rock Adult Contemporary song for "Sleeping Dogs". Daniel is firm in stating that he would much rather be thought of as a songwriter than a musician, but he has a clear and mellow voice that perfectly matches his contemporary acoustic, folk style. However, I forget myself. I am not a music critic.
It was a great pleasure photographing Daniel as we wandered the streets and back-alleys of Santa Fe on a cold December day. We were accompanied by the very lovely Elizabeth Roney, who graciously stepped into a few shots to add a story-telling quality to the images and to provide some additional visual interest. Even better, on this cold day, was the occasional stop into a coffee shop or restaurant to warm ourselves and to swap life-stories and philosophies. Does life get better than that?
Here is a person worth listening to and a name you should tuck in the back of your memory. I hope you enjoy the images of Daniel Snow. To listen to "Sleeping Dogs" click here.
American Samoa Tsunami- In the early morning of 29 September 2009 a large earthquake occurred in the South Pacific triggering a tsunami that moved at an estimated speed of over 250 miles per hour. It arrived within minutes, largely without warning, at the islands of American Samoa, Western Samoa and Tonga. The tsunami caused vast devastation to those islands and left over 100 dead, many of them the elderly and children who were unable to escape the rapidly rising water. I was sent to help organize American Red Cross relief efforts in American Samoa for the several thousands of victims that suddenly found themselves without food, supplies or a home. Despite my experience in disaster relief, this was one of the most emotional operations that I have participated in. I found myself compelled to write a series of e-mail accounts which you are invited to read. Please note that none of the disaster images shown on this website were taken by me. Rather, they were taken by other disaster relief workers who were with me during this operation. They, then, contributed these images to the Red Cross Public Affairs administrator who compiled and distributed them to each of the workers. The photo on the left was taken by Nick Giaconi who took many excellent images.
Georgia Floods- A "500-year" flood occurred in northern and central Georgia on 21 September 2009 following several days of intense rain. I was honored to participate in this disaster relief operation for the American Red Cross. It was a particularly sad operation for me, though, because of my inability to help the large number of undocumented Hispanic workers who were severely affected by the flooding. Please read more.
Kieran Sequoia Glamour Photoshoot- Canadian born actress, Kieran Sequoia, is absolutely beautiful. There is no question about that. She is also enormously talented, having starred in a dozen films and several television and theatrical performances. My favorite thing about Kieran, though, is that she is both gracious and fearless as a photo subject. She photographs beautifully because she does not dwell on beauty; rather her images project both intimacy and candor. On 12 September, I had the opportunity to take some portrait and glamour images of Kieran in Española, New Mexico, in preparation for her upcoming trip to Los Angeles. We shot with only natural light and minimal props at both the dilapidated Mel Patch building and outside in my studio courtyard. Click here to see some images of a talent that you will surely hear more about in the future.
Tanzania Trip- On 7 July, I left for a three-week trip to Tanzania to visit my brother and his wife, Lenny Ahadi Njema. Looking back on it, I am not sure what I expected. What I found, though, is that, as beautiful as the land and wildlife are, it is the people who are the most compelling and have the ability to break your heart. Through the kindness of Lenny (my "dada mdogo") and my brother, I was provided a glimpse of the tremendous warmth, honor, and courage of the Tanzanian people, particularly the Pare tribe, who I am related to by marriage. I have put together a photo-journal, of sorts, that you are invited to visit. I hope, in viewing it, that you can get a little bit of the flavor of life in Tanzania.
